Is it a metaphor or just a cool video?

Dad sent this to me in an email awhile back. Well, actually, he sent me a version from Brightcove (better quality image). It almost seems metaphorical to me now, but either way it's fascinating. And the one who took the video is, in my opinion, completely nuts.
