XML and Business Process Modeling (Tao)
  • Papers
    • Identify a research topic on BPM, XML or Ajax, or their applications, that has potential to be a dissertation topic. Each team needs to write a 20-page report clearly describing the problem, current status, significance, potential solution methodology with justification, and a reference list. A PPT file will be prepared for class presentation during the last class. As an alternative to such a report, a team can also study and enhance an Ajax example application (not the Hello World one) of the Google Web Toolkit at http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/, and document and present its architecture and working.   • Presentations - Present a polished 5-page idea paper and a plan to advance the idea over the coming semester.

    • (Activity 1) (M, D, and J) Preliminary public copy of your patterns to Bergin by April 5 (PDF or RTF). You will be assigned to a workshop with a few other authors. Read the papers of your workshop JUST prior to April 12. On the 12th we will workshop the patterns.
    • (Activity 2) Continue work on implementing your introduction plan.

    • Read Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of textbook Beginning XML with DOM and Ajax;
    • Read the draft of Lixin’s book chapter 2: Introduction to XML Technologies
      available in Blackboard Course Documents;
    • Read Chapters 1 and 2 of textbook Essential Business Process Modeling;
  • Quiz
    • Complete a one-hour open-book quiz 2 on essential concepts of BPM through DPS Blackboard between 9AM of April 26 and 8PM of April 27. Completed

    • Team 2 presents Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 of the BPM textbook.

    • Complete Assignment 1: write a simple XML Schema file to define an XML document structure for simplified technical report (it must support tags for report title, chapter, two levels of sections, and item lists; more features for extra credits); write a sample XML document for technical report based on your Schema specification (the document should make reference to your external Schema file); validate your XML document against your Schema specification with my utility “SaxParse” to remove any bugs; post a zip file containing your XML and Schema files in the Discussion Board of DPS Blackboard by replying to the thread for Assignment 1 submission under a
      forum for January 26, 2008.       Completed
    • Complete Assignment 2: write a simple XSL stylesheet to transform your technical report sample XML file, submitted in Assignment 1, into an HTML file with my utility “Transform”; post a zip file containing your XSL stylesheet file, the resulting HTML file, and your XML and Schema files (which may be the same as those in your solution to assignment 1) in the Discussion Board of DPS Blackboard by replying to the thread for Assignment 2 submission under a forum for February 23, 2008.
